Another Sequel to Gone With the Wind

Gone With the Wind is easily one of my favorite books. I’m fascinated by the Civil War, and the depth of the love between Rhett and Scarlett sweeps me away – even if things don’t work out in the end. Maybe its because I read the book for the first time when I was 12 or 13, around the time when my little brain cells were bursting with the ideas of love.

And then came Scarlett. Its not a bad book, by any stretch of the imagination. I don’t return to it time and time again, the way I do the original, though. (The made-for-TV movie of Scarlett, however, was horrible. Simply horrible. I remember watching it and thinking “Wow, they got a big fan and a spray bottle and the director yelled ‘Its a storm! You’re afraid!’”)

Now, another “sequel” is being published 0 called “Rhett Butler’s People.” The novel is said to be a retelling of Gone With the Wind from Rhett’s point of view, including more of his history as well. (You can read the full review from the New York Times, but it requires a free registration.) After trying out two authors, both of whom failed to pass the expectations of Margaret Mitchell’s estate, Donald McCaig was tapped as the right man to re-create the mind of Rhett. (Donald even looks right for the part. Check out his pic!)

I’m sure I’ll read the book, and there’s a good chance I’ll enjoy it as well. The real question for me is whether or not it can compare to the original.
