Life is a Highway

As I’ve been getting ready the last several mornings, the song “Life is a Highway” keeps coming on the radio. I’m sure that most of you probably think that my radio station is rather behind the times, but its not. They just seem to have some affinity for that song.

I’ve used the analogy of life being a road before, and it ties in well with my recent posts about being lost versus wandering. We’re all on our own roads in this life, and sometimes other people join us on those roads, and sometimes they leave using any one of a dozen different exits.

When our lives are full of people, and in some ways, obstacles, it seems as if we’re on the 12-lane interstates of California. And when we’re in the slower times, it may be a two-lane back-country road. Neither is better, nor worse, just different.

No matter what kind of road you’re on, the fact is this: you’re on that road alone. Other people may merge onto it, and exit from it, but its your road. You’re the one driving, choosing your speed and your direction. The only person with you for your entire life is yourself, so its up to you to make the most of it.

Life’s like a road that you travel on
there’s one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind

There’s a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won’t haunt you anymore
Where the brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore

We won’t hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There’s not much time left today

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you’re going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Through all these cities and all these towns
It’s in my blood and it’s all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver’s lights

Knock me down, and back up again
You’re in my blood
I’m not a lonely man

There’s no load I can’t hold
Road so rough, this I know
I’ll be there when the light comes in
Just tell ‘em we’re survivors

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you’re going my way
I wanna drive it all night long
