Summer Bummer – Reading Lists

I’ve never been quite normal – I’ve always enjoyed reading (and writing) a little more than the average person. When summer reading lists came out, I was always at the library, getting the first 3 books and happily checking each one off the list.

Joe Queenan has an interesting article on the New York Times site (registration required) about how summer reading lists wreck the summers of countless high school students.

I, for one, enjoyed nearly all of the books that I’ve read, on some level. Even now, I seek out reading lists and try to go back and read classic literature, not because it’s necessarily as enjoyable as today’s popular novelists, but because they provide historical perspective and a basis for many references in today’s culture.

Don’t believe me? Check out this blog about the last episode of LOST… “Lost: Through the Looking Glass.” Now, maybe if I had read Alice in Wonderland (oddly, its one that I haven’t read yet), I would have been able to provide this insight to my Lost-obsessed friends. Well, Alice in Wonderland and the Bible.
