How Harry Potter Gave Me Meaning

I’m a book devourer. I admit it. I get a book and I can hardly put it down until I’ve read it, cover to cover. That’s what I did with the new Harry Potter book, even though I tried to tell myself I wouldn’t.

And now that it’s over, I’m feeling a little lost.

Its not because of anything that happens in the book. (I’m going to be spoiler-free here readers!) Its more that for the 5 days that it took me to read the book, I had a real, true focus. If I had free time, it was “Harry time!” I didn’t care who lived, or who died, or where the book took me. Wherever it was going, I was going too.

And then, as quickly as it began, it was over.

I can’t go back and start at the beginning of the series. Yet. I’m sure at some point I will. So instead, I’ll go back to Middlemarch, which was casually tossed aside when the magical world of Potter came back into my life. But its not engrossing the way Harry was. I don’t know if its because everyone around me was reading Harry Potter as well, so we could have the hushed conversations in the hallway and ask “What chapter are you on?” and we all knew what we were referring to. Maybe it was truly just the quality of the story, which carries you along in a way that not many books have recently.

But whatever it is, the magic ended at the last page, when I sat the book down, and breathed a little sigh. And that meaning that Harry brought, for those few days… its wandering around again, waiting for me to find it.
