"A Girl Like You"

I’ve heard a fair number of guys lately say “I wish I could find a girl like you.” Well, newsflash guys… you found me. Here I am. Single. Available. Not Attached, as one of my t-shirts says.

I don’t really know what it is that makes me so appealing to these guys. I’ve been told its because I’m the kind of girl you can bring home to Mom. I’m “marriage material.” And guys in my age group are supposedly ready to settle down and get married. (No, that doesn’t mean that I am. That’s not what I’m looking for. If it happens, that’s fine, but its not what I’m seeking out.)

So, after these guys say they want a girl like me, I start asking “Do you want a girl like me, or do you want me?” Most of the time I get the answer that they want me. And then they turn around and do everything that you don’t do if you want to be with me. They get drunk and drive. They smoke (and not just cigarettes). When I’m really lucky, they even sleep with someone else.

So, here’s the next news flash. A girl like me doesn’t want a guy who behaves like that. I don’t drink so much that I wake up drunk the next morning. I don’t wake up next to people I don’t know. I’ve never smoked, and I have no desire to do so. Now, most of these things aren’t so bad individually, but all combined they just indicate that you have no respect for yourself.

If you want a girl like me, act like it. Clean up your act. Be honest. Don’t say the things you think I want to hear. Say the things that really come from the heart. If you’re upset, I can be there to listen. (Ask my friends. I’m good at that.) If you need some space, just say so. All I ask is for open communication. And to be the girl you want to wake up next to.

If that’s just too much to ask, stop saying you want a girl like me. Accept that I can be your best girl – friend (not girlfriend). I’ll listen and support you while you go through your phases and your women. And then you’ll find a nice girl like me (who isn’t me) and you’ll settle down. You’ll fall in love, take her home to meet Mom. I’ll be there at your wedding, and be the cool Aunt for your children.

The girl you want really is a girl like me, but she isn’t me at all.

B, very well said. You are quite the writer. I like your train of thought. You have thought a lot about this and clearly it has been going on for some time.
