I started getting the Oprah newsletter a few weeks ago. I like it because it’s not the same content every day – it varies from fashion to self-help to fitness and beyond. But I have found one little thing that’s been driving me nuts. On their affordable fashion, they list 3 price levels: steal, good deal, and splurge.

So, of course, I look at the “steal” items. I’m not rich – and I’m certainly not about to drop a load of cash on trendy things that are going to be “so out” in 3-6 months. But the “steals” are almost always over $50, and often over $100. How is that a steal? Take me to Kohls, Payless, and Target please! Show me how to look amazing (especially in this economy) without a $500 outfit.

Puh-lease.

Apparently Circuit City is laying off some of its “higher paid” work force to hire new employees at lower wages. The positions of the people being laid off *are not being eliminated* – just the higher level paychecks are. The people who are being laid off may re-apply for their current job 10 weeks after their severance. If they are re-hired, it will be at the new, lower wage. Of course, thats if their job hasn’t already been filled.

Now, I dont know about you – but I don’t see this as being a fair and just business practice – even in the face of competition. You can all make your own choices, but after reading this story, I’m not shopping at Circuit City again.

Here’s a link to the story about 4 workers in Fort Collins who were laid off.

Since I’m doing the biggest loser contest at work, I refuse to let myself buy clothes. With some hard work and luck they won’t be fitting in another few weeks anyway. So, I bought shoes.

I bought 3 pairs of shoes.

And a purse.

And sunglasses.

Remind me next time that I want retail therapy to head to the dollar store instead.

Today was my day off. For some reason, my company has decided that they wanted to close our doors in honor of our Presidents. So, I decided to partake of the wonderful world of commerce.

I shopped.

My mom and I trekked down to the Flat Irons Crossings Mall, and shopped and shopped and shopped. And all I bought was… jelly beans. That’s right. Probably a hundred stores, thousands of things to buy, and I bought jelly beans. Granted, they were “Jelly Belly” jelly beans, but they were still not really worth the drive.

And tomorrow, I get to go back to work. I’ll be helping to give a new employee orientation, which should be interesting. Of course, looking at the schedule for this week, it should be a pretty interesting week.
